Three Months Later

“Wait a second, Kwame, I don’t want you to hurt yourself running to your dad, just let him park the car first,” I say, holding back a little laugh from seeing how fast Kwame hopped out of his chair.

Kwame is so excited that Chance is pulling up into the driveway of our house, and Saint and Silas are as well, but they’re trying to play it cool with getting up out of the porch chairs they’re sitting in. Chance kills the engine to his car now, and all three of my boys look my way.

“Alright y’all can go ahead and run to him now,” I say, standing up from my chair, and they take off running like a spaceship launching into the sky.

I head down the porch steps like my boys and make my way to Chance’s car. He’s been gone the whole weekend to New York, to do a photoshoot for some big-time modeling agency. It’s nine something on a Monday morning, and Silas and Saint don’t have school since it’s spring break. The moment they heard me on Facetime with Chance prior to now, they wanted to sit outside and wait for him to pull up.

Chance steps out of the car wearing a pair of sweats, a white t-shirt, and some black Nike slides. No matter all the money he’s getting or the clothes that fashion stylists put on him to wear to certain events, and what these photographers want to capture him in, he’s forever going to want to be in something simple and chill.

Kwame, Saint, and Silas run up to him, and he bends down, pulling the three of them into a big ole hug with his long, muscular arms.

“I missed you, Dad. How did the trip go?” Silas says, as Chance releases them. Silas backs away from him, and the locs that he’s still growing are swinging around wildly.

“Yeah, I missed you as well, Dad, especially because I was getting real tired of beating Silas in Mortal Kombat. He doesn’t give me no kind of challenge. I beat his butt about ten times in a row,” Saint says, and Silas shakes his head as if Saint is lying, but he really isn’t at all.

“Daddy, hey! I-I miss you too,” Kwame says, and they’re all so freaking cute with expressing that they’ve missed Chance.

“I missed y’all too. Next time I go to New York, I’ll make sure it’s a family trip. But the trip I took was good, though. They worked your dad to death trying to get pictures, but it was cool. What did y’all three end up doing this weekend?”

Chance knows exactly what went on this weekend, from the breaks he was taking during shooting, to him being out and eating alone, and then being in his hotel, we talked every moment, even went to sleep together on Facetime.

The three of them start hounding him with answers, and he just sits back and nods, listening to everything they’re saying with a striking smile.
